The origins of MIT ReACT

The MIT Refugee Action Hub (ReACT) launched in May 2017 as a response to the MIT SOLVE call to find creative solutions to the problem of refugee education. Professor Admir Masic and Vice Chancellor Ian Waitz championed the creation of a center at MIT to design and deploy new learning opportunities for displaced populations around the world. Driven by his own experience as a refugee, Professor Masic has since led a collaborative effort with internal partners including MIT Bootcamps and the MIT Enterprise Forum Pan-Arab Region and external partners around the world to address the complex problems of this growing crisis and offer programs with the potential to change the narrative of the refugee experience.

ReACT Computer and Data Science Certificate Program (CDS)

The CDS program is a yearlong blended learning program consisting of four components which leverage the strengths of MIT. Admitted students gain a mastery of computer science and data analytics skills through the completion of a specially curated series of courses on MITx and xPRO. The international cohort then goes on to participate in a 10 week virtual Innovation Bootcamp developing valuable understandings of entrepreneurial creativity, leadership, and problem-solving through collaborating and networking with innovators around the world. These skills are then consolidated and applied through paid onsite or remote professional internships with one of our partnering organizations.

In January 2020, we successfully conferred the Computer and Data Science Certificate for the second year in a row on to 28 students from Syria, Rwanda, Jordan, Palestine, and Kenya.

ReACT DEDP MicroMasters

In June 2018, in partnership with the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL), MIT ReACT launched a new track in the MITx MicroMasters program in Data, Economics, and Development Policy (DEDP). A select group of refugee students are now enrolled in the DEDP program free of charge with access to the five online MicroMasters courses, in-person workshops in entrepreneurship, innovation, and professional development, and paid internships in the development field. Like the CDS program, the ReACT track within DEDP MicroMasters offers a blended model specifically designed to meet the needs of refugees and other displaced persons. It is our goal to use these program features to enable refugee learners to advance their education and professional careers in an accessible manner.
